The Burj Dubai is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction and expected to be functional by late 2009. Located in the Business Bay district of Dubai, upon completion Burj Arab will become the tallest man-made structure ever built. Burj Dubai is part of the 2 square kilometers (0.8 square mile) development known as "Downtown Dubai", at the "First Interchange" (or "Defence Roundabout") along Sheikh Zayed Road at Doha Street. The Burj Dubai is a majestic structure, seeming like a pinnacle rising high into the sky and dominating the Dubai skyline and clearly visible from every point in the city. The Burj Dubai is another addition to Dubai's architectural wonders, as well as to the world's.
The Burj Dubai is designed by architect Adrian Smith who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006. The architecture and engineering firm SOM is in charge of the project. The primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix along with Arabtec. Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager. The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion, with the entire new 'Downtown Dubai', costing about US$20 billion. Throughout its construction phase since 2004, Burj Arab has gradually broken several architectural records such as building with the most floors, world's tallest building, vertical concrete pumping, tallest man-made structure. Official technical details of Burj Dubai include 160 habitable floors over an area of 334,000 m2 (3,595,100 sq ft.) with a height of 818 meters (2,684 feet.) Burj Dubai has surpassed world famous buildings such as Empire State Buildings of New York, Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur, Sears Tower of Chicago, CN Tower of Toronto, all which rise to less than 600 metrers (1,968 feet.) The Burj Dubai has surpassed Warsaw radio mast, which was the world's tallest structure until its collapse in 1991.
The design of Burj Dubai is derived from patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture, with the triple-lobed footprint of the building based on an abstracted version of the flower Hymenocallis. The Burj Dubai tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at each element in an upward spiralling pattern, decreasing the cross section of the tower as it reaches toward the sky. At the top, the central core emerges and is sculpted to form a finishing spire. A Y-shaped floor plan maximizes views of the Persian Gulf. Viewed from above or from the base, the form also evokes the onion domes of Islamic architecture.
Burj Dubai will be beautified by a record setting fountain system be designed by WET Design, the California-based company responsible for the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel Lake in Las Vegas. Illuminated by 6,600 lights and 50 colored projectors, the Dubai Fountain will be 275 m (900 ft) long and will shoot water 150 m (490 ft) into the air, accompanied by a range of classical to contemporary Arabic and world music. And of course the signature palm trees surrounding the Burj Dubai will create more appeal.
Burj Dubai has been designed to be the centerpiece of a large-scale, mixed-use development that will encompass 30,000 homes, nine hotels such as the Burj Dubai Lake Hotel & Serviced Apartments, more than 7 acres of parkland, at least 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and the (30-acre) man-made Burj Dubai Lake.
Additionally, a collection of Dubai photos must include the iconic sail boated shaped Burj Al Arab hotel, overlooked by the wave-shaped Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Other spectacular sights of Dubai include the artificial man-made Palm Islands consisting of Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira. Also, The ma-made World Islands of Dubai is a must-see. Many of these areas are still under construction. In fact, Dubai photos reveal a skyline of cranes and construction sights near thriving and completed buildings and structures.
